Top Fence Trends of 2024

Welcome to our tier list of the top fence trends of 2024! We’re seeing lots of exciting trends that will impact both fence companies and property owners alike. For example, we’re seeing a new fence material -- black woven wire -- hit the market, as well as a desire among consumers for less expensive, lower maintenance fencing. Simultaneously, the demand for more privacy and security is up, so that will also impact the types of fences that people want installed in 2024. Finally, fence companies in the Midwest, and more specifically in the Chicagoland Illinois area, are expected to be more overwhelmed with inbound customers than ever before. Learn from our firsthand knowledge for the top trends in fencing for 2024.

Privacy Fences and Board on Board Style Fences Will Be All the Rage

As we move into 2024, people who own homes are putting privacy first. So, they want to put up a certain kind of fence to keep people out of their yards and away from their families. That's why we think the need for board-on-board and privacy fences will go up.

Board-on-board fences are made of straight wood boards that are stacked on top of each other. There are no gaps between the pickets in this design, which is different from a normal vertical fence.

For a board-on-board fence, a professional fence company will first put up a row of pickets that are 6 inches wide and have 1 ½ inches of space between each one. To fill in the holes, they will add a row of 4-inch pickets on top of this layer when it's done.

As you might expect, this makes it impossible to see your yard at all. In this way, you can be completely hidden from both strangers and nosy neighbors. The people who want to get into your yard will have to look over your board-on-board fence instead of through it. This makes them stand out more and is easier to catch.

Dog Panels in 2024

The dog panel fence is another style that's growing, but not for the same reason as the board-on-board fence.

Maybe you want to know what "dog panel fencing" means. That's what we call it because a lot of people, mostly dog owners, have been interested in it lately.

A dog panel fence is made up of boards that have been welded together to make them stronger. Dogs and other pets stay in their yard because of the wire. The fence works well, doesn't cost too much, and looks better than most agricultural fences. A "dog panel fence" will keep your animal in its place, whether it's a dog or various farm animals.

Black Woven Wire or Vinyl Coated Chain Link

In 2024, black twisted wire fences, as well as vinyl coated chain link, will be a style to keep an eye on. This is because black woven wire is a new product that was only put into large circulation a few months ago. Black is the most common for woven wire, while chain link does come in other less popular colors such as brown and green.

For this material, people have asked for either black-painted wooden fence posts or metal posts, such as steel or aluminum fence posts. The new look is clean, modern, and edgy. It's easier on the eyes than silver wire because it doesn't look as rough or shiny.

Woven wire fences are made of wires that have been "woven" together in a crosshatch design both horizontally and vertically. Large and small animals will not be able to get into or out of your land without it. It's great for agricultural fencing, and many property owners will like the look of black woven wire even more.

Instead of wood, cheaper materials that need less upkeep are in style.

Wood is a beautiful material for fences, but it needs a lot of upkeep. People can choose from other materials, such as vinyl and chain link, which are cheaper and easy to maintain over time. Wood still remains an inexpensive choice, and we have recently been recommending our local Chicagoland customer to consider Pressure Treated Pine over cedar. Cedar does not last long in our weather conditions, while pressure treated pine is chemically treated and can last substantially longer for this reason. Post replacement is our most common fence repair for cedar fences, so installing a treated pine fence will allow a stronger infrastructure of the fence allowing years more of service.

In 2024, that's what people will be looking for in a home: something cheap and easy to keep up. A lot of people are too busy to take the time to keep their wood fence in good shape. And it's a lot: once a year for cleaning, once a year for staining, painting, and touching up as required. Most of the time, homeowners hire professionals to do these jobs for them, but with the economy being so bad right now, they're looking for ways to save money.

Because of this, materials like vinyl and chain link will become a lot more common next year. While vinyl comes at a higher initial price, it doesn’t require as much maintenance so in theory it has a lower overall cost of ownership.

A chain link fence doesn't need to be cleaned as often as a wood fence does. In fact, the only real upkeep you need to do is trim the grass under it and treat it with something that stops rusting to keep it from happening.

Clean vinyl fences twice a year. They don't need to be stained or painted, which is a plus. They cost more than wood or chain link fences, but they will look better for longer (20–30 years or more) with little work.

Hot new styles in vinyl fencing

The benefit of going with vinyl is that they come in a variety of premium and decorative styles. Of course, those premium styles do come at a premium cost. In 2024 there will be a higher demand for more decorative and ornamental style vinyl fences due to their low maintenance and low lifetime cost of ownership.

Horizontal Fencing

Horizontal fence styles have been popular in recent years, and we love installing them! Horizontal fences are usually installed by using cedar fence materials but can also be in pine, vinyl, composite, and even aluminum.

Horizontal fences in cedar are commonly stained to not only enhance their appearance but to also provide a longer lifespan. There are 2 different options for horizontal fences, one is to use standard fence pickets horizontally, which is the lowest cost option. The second option is to use deck boards. The deck boards are of a higher quality as they are S4S (smooth 4 sides) and also a thicker grade material. And you guessed it, this results in a much higher price.

Now more than ever, security is a top concern for both businesses and homeowners

You can bet that security will be more important than ever since people are becoming more interested in their privacy. This is especially true in cities with lots of people where crime is on the rise. If people don't feel safe in their own houses, they will do what they can to make them safer, which may include building a greater fence.

More people will build their own fences, but more will need to be fixed.

One Chicago-based industry expert thinks that the demand for do-it-yourself (DIY) fence kits will go up as prices go up and people's wallets get thinner. But when it does, it will need to be fixed.

What's the reason? Because people who have never put up a fence before usually mess it up the first time, no matter how clear the assembly kit instructions are. Homeowners will likely spend a lot more than they planned to fix their mistakes because they were trying to save money in the wrong way.

That's why you should always hire a skilled fence company, no matter how much it costs, to build or fix your fence. You can always ask them to use cheaper materials, like chain link, if money is too tight. The price of a fence can drop by a huge amount just by changing the type of fence.

But there are other things to think about too. If you buy a high-quality material like vinyl now that doesn't need much upkeep, you'll have a strong, attractive fence that will last for decades. You won't have to spend as much on fixes and replacements as you might with a wood or chain link fence.

Talk to your fence company about which types of fencing will save you the most money in the long and short run.

Fence Shelves?

Have you heard of them? We think a lot of people will be interested in this style in 2024. You can put shelves on your fence to show off plants and small outdoor statues with just a few cheap materials and the right tools. Not too hard to do, but it gives your yard a lot more visual interest and decorating options for very little work. This might be just what your yard or garden needs to become more stylish and up-to-date.

It is expected that more people will want to buy agricultural and property fences.

Do you need a farm fence or fencing for your land in the country? Then you might have to deal with tough competition in the market due to the recent high demand. Many people have been moving out to the rural areas due to the high crime and bad politics in the large cities. This has caused an increased demand for large properties that need to be fenced off. Fencing off a large multi-acreage property is not cheap, so fence styles like split rail fencing are common. Split rail fencing is the most cost effective and provides a great border for a large property, however it does not provide much security. Hog wire fence or split rail with barbed wire would be best suited for those applications.

A new study says that the southern US fencing market will grow at a rate of 5.8% per year. Why is this growth happening? In the past few months, more and more landowners have been buying fence materials to keep their animals and land safe.

As a customer, what does this mean for you? It means that more and more people want to use fences for farming. For those of you who live in southern US states, you might want to get that fence you've been thinking about as soon as possible.
