Farm Fence Illinois

Farm fences in Illinois are designed to meet the diverse needs of agricultural activities, ensuring the safety and containment of livestock while also delineating property boundaries. Among the various types of farm fencing employed, the woven wire fence is particularly favored for its durability and effectiveness in containing animals such as sheep, goats, and cattle. This type of fence, often referred to as a field fence, features a mesh of wire woven into a tight grid, providing robust barrier capabilities without harming the animals.

Another popular option is the horse fence, which is typically taller and has smaller gaps between wires to prevent horses from getting their hooves stuck. This consideration is crucial in preventing injuries and ensuring the safety of these valuable animals. Additionally, farm gates are integral components of farm fencing systems in Illinois, providing secure entry points that facilitate the movement of equipment and livestock without compromising the enclosure's integrity.

For those raising larger livestock, a livestock fence designed with heavier gauge wire and reinforced posts is often employed to withstand the demands of larger animals. Regardless of the specific type, all wired fences on Illinois farms are built to be sturdy, weather-resistant, and long-lasting, ensuring they stand up to the local climate while effectively managing agricultural operations.

Farm Fence Styles

What to choose when deciding on farm fencing

Farm fencing is an essential component for agricultural operations, particularly in Illinois, where agriculture plays a crucial role in the local economy. The choice of farm fence style is influenced by several factors, including the type of livestock being contained, the terrain of the land, and the specific needs of the farm operation. This comprehensive guide explores the various farm fence styles available for installation in Illinois, detailing their features, benefits, and ideal uses.

Woven Wire Fence

Woven wire fences are among the most popular choices for farmers in Illinois. This type of fence is made by weaving wire strands together to form a durable and robust barrier. The gaps between the wires are small enough to prevent smaller livestock such as sheep and goats from escaping but large enough to ensure visibility and air flow. This style of fence is also effective for keeping out predators and is often used in combination with a strand of barbed wire at the top for added security.

Barbed Wire Fence

Barbed wire fencing is another common style in Illinois, particularly suited for containing cattle. This fence consists of strands of wire twisted together with barbs spaced at intervals. It is cost-effective and easy to install, making it a preferred choice for large areas of farmland. However, it is less suitable for animals with fine coats like horses, as they can easily be injured by the barbs.

Horse Fence

Horse fencing needs to be safe and visible to prevent injuries. Typically, this involves using wider woven wire with larger gaps between the wires, or using wooden rails. Horse fences can also incorporate a mesh design to prevent hooves from getting caught. Visibility can be enhanced with the addition of a top rail or a line of highly visible tape that runs along the top of the fence.

Chain Link Fence

While not the most common choice for livestock, chain link fences are used on farms for smaller enclosures, such as those needed for chickens or other small animals. This type of fence is extremely durable and provides a secure barrier against both escape and predators. It can be more expensive than wire alternatives but offers longevity and low maintenance.

Split Rail Fence

Split rail fencing is a traditional design that is often used for decorative purposes or to define property boundaries rather than for serious livestock containment. It consists of wooden posts and rails with gaps between the rails. While it provides a rustic aesthetic, it may need to be combined with wire mesh to securely contain animals.

Deer Fence

In rural areas of Illinois where wildlife interaction is common, deer fencing can be necessary to protect crops and gardens from grazing. Deer fences are typically much taller than standard farm fences (often 8 feet or higher) and can be made from a variety of materials, including heavy-duty wire mesh and solid panels.

PVC Fence

PVC or vinyl fencing is a less common choice for livestock but is favored for its aesthetic appeal and low maintenance requirements. It is resistant to weathering and does not need painting or staining. However, it is generally more suitable for smaller animals or residential properties rather than for heavy-duty farm use.

Field Fence

Field fences are designed to cover extensive areas and are suitable for a variety of livestock types. This fence style typically features smaller mesh sizes at the bottom, which gradually increase towards the top. This design helps prevent smaller animals from getting through the fence near the ground while still maintaining cost-effectiveness over large areas.

Farm Fence Installation in Illinois

Choosing the right farm fence in Illinois depends on the specific needs of the farm, the type of animals being contained, and the topography of the land. Each fencing style offers unique benefits, from the robust security of woven wire to the psychological barrier of electric fencing. Farmers must consider both the immediate and long-term needs of their operation to select the most appropriate and cost-effective fencing solution. This guide provides a foundation for understanding the diverse fencing options available, aiding Illinois farmers in making informed decisions to support their agricultural endeavors.
